Normally on outings many animal sign are there to see but the wild animals themselves are very shy. They can see, hear and smell you coming.

Your chances of seeing wild animals improves if you are quiet and don't use strong perfumes and colognes.

General Questions

Q. Where will we go?

A. We can find great sign anyhere, but we have an ideal spot here in the Barnard Chatauquay, a 55,000 acre wilderness area that is habitat to every animal in the state. It is the second largest contigent area in the state without roads.

Q. Do we have Catamounts here in New England?

A. I never believed it until I saw these tracks. These, we believe, are catamount tracks we found up in northern New Hampshire at Dixville Notch.

Q. Why is fisher cat called a fisher cat - they don't generally eat fish and are not cats?

A. They look a bit like a house cat and they generally travel along stream beds, so they were believed to kill fish. Travel on a stream bed is easier in winter and a good location for voles and mice, which is their main diet.
